Hurrying to meet the rest of our group for a museum tour, the hostess at Gallagher’s Boxty Totally Irish said he could have us in and out in an hour, then notified the entire staff. Immediately it was evident that Gallagher’s had great hospitality.
Boxty is a traditional Irish pancake, made up of mashed and grated potatoes in a thick buttermilk batter panfried to resemble a pancake. If I were given a pancake and a Boxty together, I am not sure I could identify which was made of potato and which was not – it was that pancake-like.
I ordered the savory, vegetarian Boxty with vegetable and bean chili, grated cheddar cheese, fluffy sour cream, and chives on top of two soft Boxties. On the side I was served a salad, or as they called it- “leaves.”

My friend El ordered the vegetarian platter with crispy Boxty, which was similar to a pita chip size and texture but made out of potato. In fact, most of our group, including non-vegetarians, ordered a vegetarian option. With over 20 allergies listed at the bottom of the menu to be aware of, even celery, and with the rare option of gluten free fish and chips, Gallagher’s was very accommodating and accessible for all allergies and diets.

My other friend Bella ordered the fish and chips with.. mushed peas? As we traveled and tried several different fish and chips throughout the trip, we found that mushed peas were a common and popular side dish, often adding a fresh thick paste to the crispy fish. We also learned a crucial lesson when Bella ordered water, did not specify “still” water, and received intense sparkling water. A fun surprise.
Although a sign in the restaurant said “g’wan, spoil yourself, try our homade deserts, Irish cheeses, and dessert cocktails,” we had to leave to make our museum tour. (Fun fact: “G’wan” is Irish slang for “go on,” and if often screamed during sporting matches.) Gallagher’s did in fact get us in and out with good food in under an hour.
